Tames celebrates after a double against Southport last year

Prolific striker Steven Tames looks set to finally join Southport after having joined them for pre-season training ahead of the new Conference season kicking off next month.

Tames was targeted by Sandgrounders manager Liam Watson in March last season following an impressive hat trick by the Prescot Cables striker against a very experienced Tranmere Rovers side in the Liverpool Senior Sup semi-final.

Speaking exclusively to Football Editorial today Steven Tames said: ”I hope negotiations can be completed soon and I am looking forward to joining Southport in time for the new season.”

Watson’s renewed interest was confirmed on the club’s web site and it looks as though on-going talks could see Tames complete his dream move very shortly.

His goal-scoring prowess – he finished with 19 for the season for Cables – brought him to the attention of several clubs including Rochdale, Accrington Stanley and Sheffield Wednesday.

Watson’s interest last season brought a tetchy response from Valerie Park with then manager Shaun Reid saying he was “disappointed” that Southport’s interest in Tames had become common knowledge through the local press.

But the deal never came to fruition and Tames saw out the season with Cables while biding his time before making any long-term decisions about his future.

His record owes much to his work rate and tenacity in and around the penalty area where he displays confidence and a self-belief that strikers need in abundance to deliver goals on a consistent basis.
