About: Skelmersdale United are one of the most historical and successful clubs in the Merseyside area having been founded in 1882.

Two FA Amateur cup final appearances in the late 60s/early 70s – the second a victory over Dagenham to take the prestigious trophy came in the club’s most successful period.

In more recent years, the club has consistently finished near the top of the Evo Stik Division One North, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier Division (tier three of non league football) because they finished second.

Second place enters a playoff, and Skelmersdale have lost three years in a row at the final stage. In 2010/11, a dramatic last day saw Skelmersdale nearly snatch a promotion place after needed an eight-goal turnaround on leaders Chester on the last day.

At one point Skelmersdale looked have achieved the impossible, but a 7-2 win was just short by two goals and Skelmersdale went on to lose in the playoffs.

However, with talented manager Tommy Lawton and a new chairman in place, Skelmersdale will hope to win the league outright this year and join Marine FC at the higher level.
