About: Southport FC is the biggest non league club on Merseyside. Known as the Sandgrounders, the club was founded in 1881 and was the last club to be voted out of the Football League in 1978 – the last time the club experienced league football.

Southport play their home games at Haig Avenue, a 6,000 capacity stadium with a mixture of seating and standing areas. The club was professional until as recently as 2008, when relegation to the Conference North brought about a change to semi-pro.

The club has yo-yoed between the two Conference divisions in recent years and in 2010/11 were relegated from the Conference Premier. However, the demise of Rushden & Diamonds and subsequent expulsion from the league has given Southport a relegation reprieve.

Southport are currently managed by ex-Maghull player Liam Watson, a well known admirer and promoter of local talent.
